About Us
Luter Meza Bernal & The Mayan Shaman
Our holistic center in Ek Balam is guided by the vision and direction of its founder Luter Meza Bernal. Luter is a professional musician and vocal teacher with a broad background in voice training, overtone singing, and ethnic or ancestral vocal styles. He is also the author of The Nature of Human Sound.
Fascinated by the special energy one can feel in Ek Balam, Luter arrived here around 2005, finding something he had dreamed about for years: the possibility of living side by side with a community rooted in their ancestral traditions.
Ever the natural leader, teacher and keeper of heritage at heart, he immediately began including the Maya community in his vision, work and project. The families helped to build his house and later the beautiful green sanctuary where you can now find the facilities of the holistic center. At the same time he explored together with the children of these families their ancestral roots and heritage. He reminded them that it important to honor this legacy and carrying it on.
The result of that today is that everything offered here is guided by real Maya from Ek Balam, people born in the village, speaking the Maya language, and practicing their traditions every day.
Our main ceremony leader and healer was among the children who grew up around Luter, and later became his student, and from there he chose to dedicate himself fully to the ancestral ways. Today he carries the wisdom of his lineage into every ceremony.
Inspired by the living presence of the Mayan culture in Ek Balam, also The Mayan Warriors was born, a collective of young Maya practicing traditional dance, movement, and guardianship. They are not performers dressed for tourism. They are 100% authentic Maya, rooted in their culture, their language, and their ancestral identity.
What began as a simple home is now a sanctuary where authentic tradition continues to live:
Sacred Mayan Wedding Ceremony
A natural space sustained by community and the land
We exist to honor the land, the people, and the traditions that continue to live here; and we welcome you to experience this living tradition with respect, presence, and heart.
